Description of Course:
In skilled nursing settings, patients are often labeled as “difficult,” “noncompliant,” or “agitated,” but these behaviors are often symptoms of underlying medical, psychological, or emotional issues. This engaging session will help attendees reframe behavior as meaningful communication and better understand its root causes, including depression, dementia, trauma, and loss of control. Participants will gain practical strategies to respond effectively, reduce staff frustration, and improve patient outcomes. Walk away with tools you can use immediately to create a calmer, more effective care environment.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify common underlying causes of challenging behaviors in skilled nursing patients, including depression, dementia, delirium, and trauma
- Differentiate between behavioral symptoms associated with cognitive impairment, mental health conditions, and medical factors

- Implement clinically informed approaches to improve patient engagement, reduce staff burnout, and enhance care outcomeses
